The New Boredom

Video Week Apparently: Lady Gaga and Experimental Cinema.

I’m burnt this week so here are some more videos.

First two are bmx. And they blow my mind. First one is neato. Second one is balls out nuts.

Okay, the other thing I want to talk about is Lady Gaga. As far as I can tell, the haters’ only real complaint lodged against her is that she may possibly have a penis. There have been times when I would find this completely believable. But aside from that, no real valid arguments against her that I’ve heard. At least none that stand up to more than 15 seconds of easy debunking. Anyway, I finally got around to watching the video for “Telephone” and a few things caught me right away. First is the obvious penis joke that she takes on right away to raise a middle finger right at the haters’ only possible gripe. Then the better dancing than in the Bad Romance video. Then the Pussywaggon. Then Beyonce totally being put into a Martin Arnold universe.

If you don’t know what that last bit was referring to, don’t worry. Not a lot of folks outside of experimental film have ever heard the name. But He does this work in editing where he will loop sections of a movie back and forth for an insane amount of time. The first time I saw his work was Piece Touchee which is found footage that lasts maybe 15 seconds or something in the original film. Arnold takes it and loops chunks of it in various ways to make what is about a 15 minute film. When you watch 15 seconds of a movie for 15 minutes, you end up seeing things that were never meant to be extracted like false dry humping, sexual tension, all kinds of social constructs about personal interaction, and sometimes you get a terrible god damn headache. You ever say a word over and over and over until it no longer sounds like a real word to you? It becomes this vague strange concept of a word that you don’t even know what it means or what language it is? Try thinking about Martin Arnold’s work like that. A simple act like walking through a door to kiss your wife can become something completely foreign and alienating when you break it down to this insane level. Here’s what I could find on the tubes:

If you made it through the first half of Piece Touchee, you should watch all of his work which is up here on google video. I really like his work but it is absolutely exhausting. I really suggest that you watch it but do so in chunks that you can handle.

In lighter media- this is priceless.
