My Favorite Things: My His/Hers Matching Guitars.

leave a comment »

This was kind of intentional all along but I never said so because I thought it might make me seem creepy. But I wanted to get matching his/hers guitars for my lady and me. I ended up finding the “hers” a lot earlier than the “his.”

The hers is a 1983 Fender Strat, made in Japan. I had the damnedest time finding this one because I wanted it to have a rosewood fretboard and the skunktail running up the back of the neck and it had to be in the candy apple red. I lost out of a few auctions that had 2 of the 3 requirements and was pretty bummed about it. Then as I was bumming really hard about it one night this thing showed up for sale and I pounced.

The matching mate didn’t show up for about 7 more months mostly because I figured if the right one showed up for the hers, then the right one would for the his too, I’d just have to wait.

The his is an ’85 Fender Tele, also made in Japan. My lady likes a lot harder and faster music than I do so she gets the punk Strat with the tricked out tremolo set up. I’m a much more folky-twangy-douche bag though so I get the Tele and basically never have it on the neck pick up.

Some day if we ever end up with kids (good lord, not any time soon) these will get handed off to them, beat up and waiting for another generation.

I bet that fat shit is…

My Favorite Things: My Hollowbody Guitar.

with 2 comments

So I’ll probably just do guitars and then get bored with “My Favorite Things”…

I got this hollowbody guitar off ebay a while back. It’s one of those impulse buys that I made where I saw the thing and just said “YES PLEASE.”

Turns out the thing is probably a mid-60’s Tempo brand guitar. I’ve looked everywhere for another one, but nothing that I’ve found on the internets is exactly like mine. It came from the Matsumoku factory where Univox branded guitars came from in the same period. The other Tempo branded ones I’ve seen have single volume/tone knobs but different pickups or different binding or different shaped f-holes. When I first got it, the action was a mile high and it was impossible to play more than 5 frets up the neck. I took it in to the same guy that finished up the wiring on my Airline replica and picked it up the next day amazed at how different it felt. This guitar is probably the easiest to play out of my pile.I may take off the pick guard one of these days because all the cool kids are doing that.

It’s a really twangy country guitar when you play it straight. The shitty plastic pickups wake up nicely when you run it through some fuzz or gain. It’s cheap and light weight and I loved it instantly. Every time I get the itch to buy a sturdier semi-hollow/hollow body guitar, I play this for about 5 minutes and close all the new ebay tabs in my browser.

The Best Sign Ever for one of the best movies ever. I’m going to watch some Kapra this December.

My Favorite Things: The First Guitar I Put Together.

leave a comment »

Oprah’s got her favorite things but, ya know, she’s going away soon so in her place, I’m stepping in to dish out what I consider great things. I’m doing this right after Thanksgiving due to the conflicting messages we get about this time of year. One day, the message is “be thankful for what you’ve got” and then literally the next day, the message is “YOU NEED TO BUY MORE SHIT.”

Anyway, my favorite thing for today is this here git-tar that I put together over this last summer. You can find more like it from and build your own if you like it. It took me all summer of drilling holes in the wrong places and re-glue-ing things and having to switch out various parts for better fitting things, and then by the end, I couldn’t make it work because I couldn’t figure out the wiring. I ended up taking it to Tim at Front Porch Lutherie to get the wiring and finishing touches done to it. The thing sounds good to me and it’s been fun as hell to have around. And yeah, I like Jack White and I like his guitar. But I don’t like spending three grand on a real 60’s Airline Resoglas guitar. This one works alright in place of a “real” one. Plus this one has been messed up by me and only me.

And maybe some day I’ll make sounds come out of it that are not horrible and offensive?

This is from old Kenny Anger because my lady digs his stuff the most.

Blackest Friday Ever.

leave a comment »

I went to the mall this morning and everyone was dressed like they were in Gwar and the stores were playing Mayhem instead of Christmas carols and then I saw a teething baby chewing on a dead rat’s tail while his parents cut each other with a broken bottle.

Then I woke up.

But then I actually went to the mall and it was worse than my dream! It was a war-zone. Everyone was being really rude to store clerks who already looked exhausted by mid-morning when they would normally just be rolling into the jobs they hate. The parking lot was like a so-cal freeway, riddled with minor accidents. The Cinnabon was being sacked by fat people slightly winded from placing their orders. It was hell, just as Camus was all salty about- other people. Other people everywhere!

But at least on this blackest friday ever, we have a new Danny Mac video to enjoy.

Not to sound like a complete asshole but thank goodness he’s getting to shoot with people who can actually make a decent video now unlike the old days with that certain what’s-his-face-guy that used to have a sort of monopoly on shooting with MacAskill. He was awful.

Poultry Genocide Day!

Thankful for: My lady, my family, my good friends, my lady’s dog, a pile of guitars, a pile of bikes, a pile of shot Kodachrome,  a pile of great records, the simple things, a mild winter, a few good tv shows, a job that keeps me under a roof, the places I’ve been, the places I’m going, all the obsolete cameras…

and Neil Young this morning:

That’s satisfying.

Hope you all have a good day of gluttony and reflection on how lucky we all are.

Don’t know how this worked but I like the effect.

T-1 loves Colorado. And I love T-1.

Dang, that feels fresh.
I may have to just go and buy myself a Terrible One frame some day.

Back In The Time.

leave a comment »

Back in the time when I still rode some kind of trials, I got on board this 24″ trend, which was still very young back in 2007ish. I was pretty pumped on it and things were grand. My friend Mike and I went around shooting clips for a spring of us doing stupid dinky little tricks and it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had. Nothing in the video is particularly impressive and nothing is anything close to Danny Macaskill… but it was fun and I had a smile on my face for like 14 straight weekends shooting this.

Jon shows up for a few shots in the middle, Mike is the much taller-than-me white dude, and I’m the one that looks like TJ.

Ah the good old days.

Bruce claims they will pass you by. But I’m not sure.
