Missing Road Trips

I am missing the hell out of road trips right now. I hope I’m not sick as a dog in a couple weeks when I have one planned for a small town in the middle of flat-mid-west-no-where.

Photo Dump- 12.5.10

Been a while since I’ve done one of these. Here are pictures that I found noteworthy.

Saddest cat ever.

Initiate hipster jizz-fest on this storefront.

Still remember the first time I saw this video.

Number One, I order you to take a number two…

Because being Lou Reed still means something in this world dammit.

This really would have shortened things and left a lot of idiots less confused.

My Favorite Things: The Blues.

leave a comment »

This one is short.

I like music (a lot) and if I had to pick a kind of music, I’ll take, over just about anything else, one person with a guitar on their front porch singing about (from the liner notes of Johnny Cash’s American Recordings): “songs about horses, railroads, land, judgment day, family, hard times, whiskey, courtship, marriage, adultery, separation, murder, war, prison, rambling, damnation, home, salvation, death, pride, humor, piety, rebellion, patriotism, larceny, determination, tragedy, rowdiness, heartbreak and love. And Mother and God.”

Cover art like this makes me like the blues even more.

Okay, this idea was not that great, favorite things is over now.

I also love me some non-blues sounding stuff, like Joy Division. And if you can buy this on a damn t-shirt from Urban Outfitters, you should just tell people it’s the picture of a dying star and not some commercialized tribute to Ian Curtis.

Figure 6.7, from the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy: a graph of “successive pulses” or “flashes” emitted by the dying star CP 1919; commonly recognized as the cover art of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures.

My Favorite Things: Kodachrome Film.

leave a comment »

Paul Simon wrote a song about how his mom was going to take away his Kodachrome…

And then in 2011, that bitch took it the fuck away.

The last Kodachrome film will be processed by Dwayne’s Photo lab in Parsons, Kansas and the cut off to get film to them is high noon on December 30th. I’m planning a road trip out there right now to shoot along the way and hand off my last precious rolls of the best silver recipe ever.

I’m about half way through my stash and will be glad to get back any results at all. I don’t care if it’s going to cost me an arm and a leg, I’m just happy to be shooting film. But happy in that bittersweet way because I know that after December, I will never see another new thing that I’ve shot on Kodachrome ever again.

I just don’t think it will mean as much to me to work my way through my stash of 200t EXR film with its delicate pastels or my 800t Vision film with its giant grain structure. Kodachrome will be something I tell my grand kids about while they are all watching holographic HD 3D projections spring up from their pocket sized iThings… that is if we still use pockets by then.

Would have looked better on Kodachrome…
