The New Boredom

My Favorite Things: The Blues.

This one is short.

I like music (a lot) and if I had to pick a kind of music, I’ll take, over just about anything else, one person with a guitar on their front porch singing about (from the liner notes of Johnny Cash’s American Recordings): “songs about horses, railroads, land, judgment day, family, hard times, whiskey, courtship, marriage, adultery, separation, murder, war, prison, rambling, damnation, home, salvation, death, pride, humor, piety, rebellion, patriotism, larceny, determination, tragedy, rowdiness, heartbreak and love. And Mother and God.”

Cover art like this makes me like the blues even more.

Okay, this idea was not that great, favorite things is over now.

I also love me some non-blues sounding stuff, like Joy Division. And if you can buy this on a damn t-shirt from Urban Outfitters, you should just tell people it’s the picture of a dying star and not some commercialized tribute to Ian Curtis.

Figure 6.7, from the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy: a graph of “successive pulses” or “flashes” emitted by the dying star CP 1919; commonly recognized as the cover art of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures.
