Story Time: Bad Dreams About Clocks

leave a comment »

Back when I was a little kid, like six or seven years old, I used to have this dream over and over again. I’d open my eyes and find myself perched on the minute hand of a giant clock on the face of a skyscraper. It would be about ten minutes past the hour. There was no where for me to go. I was just sitting on this big clock hand. As the time passed, the clock hand began to drop and at first it didn’t seem like such a big deal. But after 5 or 6 minutes, I’d realize that this thing is going to point down pretty soon. And I’d just have to sit there and wait for it to reach a point where I could no longer stay perched on it and I would slide off the end and to my death. The next 7-8 minutes in the dream lasted an eternity because I was just waiting for the moment when my support would be taken out from under me and I’d fall to my death.

I would wake up from this dream every time with a crushing feeling of dread. It wasn’t like I had been able to tell time on an analog clock for all that long, maybe a couple of years at most. The concept of death also was fairly strange and new to me at that point.

I never told anyone about that dream until a couple days ago. I wish some one had explained the metaphor that I was dreaming and how we’re all just terrified of life and how no one can stop the clock from letting us slip off into our death.

But then again, if I had a kid that was dreaming things like that I don’t know if I’d know what to do about it anyway.

This weird thing has been happening lately with me where one, or both of my thumbs will sort of give it a half hearted effort at dislocating, which is worse than if they would just come all the way out. But that’s my excuse for not journaling my life lately.

It does give me an excuse to post a photo of Moe, though I couldn’t find the exact frame grab where he says “They’re gonna take my thumbs!”

This make something cool every day project is damn great. I especially enjoy the IM conversations from movies.

And this TED winner makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

It’s almost puppy season.

Happy Time Videos

There are now two internet videos that I will watch on a fairly regular basis (every 6 weeks or so) for no other reason than they make me happy.

The first is Dutch West’s September video.

And the new one is Brett Domino’s Bad Romance cover.

Yup. I’m a nerd.

“If you want a portrait of the world in 25 years, it’s old people in big, dirty cities, who are afraid of the sky.”

“You’re not smart, as you think you are. And the future is not as smart as you think the future is. Because the future is basically like the past and the past is stupid. And most of the future is stupid. And you know, people who are interested in the future are very intelligent and they tend to project their own intelligence onto what’s happening but in fact, it doesn’t actually happen- it’s never happened.”

Here I am pining for some rolls of Plus-X in a world that uses the internet for lolcats. And I’m still part of the problem.

Lots Of Space

Turns out space is huge and really damn interesting.

Take for example this calculator that will show you how many communicating civilizations there are in your galaxy according to the Drake equation. See? Crazy interesting.

You need more proof? We just saw the new farthest and oldest thing in the universe to us. And from a handful of pixels, some smart people figured out it’s a little mini-galaxy of blue stars that came to be about 440 million years after the big bang.

So that’s pretty neat, huh?

And if you’re not into science because you’re either too square or not square enough (either way, I hope you’re happy being a turd), then here’s one of those lists that tells you about your life situation based on your favorite “indie” bands. That list mostly proved to me how un-hip I am these days. I don’t know who half of those probably crappy acts are.

That moment when you’re reading a book and you read a sentence that contains the title of the book.
